How to Reduce Clock Speed
The clock speed on a computer's CPU determines the power capacity of the CPU. The higher the CPU's clock speed, the better performance you will get out of the CPU and computer. You may need to reduce the clock speed on a CPU if the CPU is outputting too much heat. You can adjust the clock speed from the Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) menu.
- Turn on the computer. Press the "Delete" key as soon as the computer starts booting to enter the BIOS menu.
- Locate the menu for the CPU settings. This menu may be under such titles as "JumperFree Configuration" or "Frequency/Voltage Control." Consult the motherboard's manual. The location of this setting will vary depending on the motherboard.
- Locate the CPU clock setting, which usually will be called "CPU Operating Speed." Press "Enter." Lower the value of the number to underclock the computer's CPU.
- Press "F10" to save the settings and reboot the computer.
